Storage Unit Sizes in South Burlington, VT

Not sure how much space you need? You're not alone — it's one of the most common questions we get. This guide walks through every unit size we offer at Harbor View Self Storage, what you can realistically fit inside, and how to choose the right one without paying for space you don't need. All of our units are indoors and fully climate-controlled — that matters in Vermont, where cold winters and humid summers can damage furniture, electronics, documents, and anything sensitive to temperature swings. Whether you're storing a few boxes or the contents of a full house, every unit here is protected from the Champlain Valley's extremes year-round.

Small Storage Units

5×5 — 25 Square Feet

Best for: Personal items, seasonal gear, small apartment overflow

Think of a 5×5 as a large walk-in closet. It's a great fit when you don't need to store furniture — just boxes, bins, and smaller items. Vermont-specific uses: ski equipment and poles, snowshoes and hiking gear, off-season clothing, holiday decorations, and small sports equipment.

What fits:

Up to 50 standard file boxes
A small mattress set or a chest of drawers
Seasonal outdoor gear (skis, snowshoes, bike gear)
Small appliances, lamps, mirrors

What doesn't fit: a sofa, dining table, or any full bedroom set.

5×10 — 50 Square Feet

Best for: Studio apartment, dorm room cleanout, one room of furniture

A 5×10 is roughly the size of a standard walk-in closet or a pickup truck bed. It's the most popular size for people between leases or decluttering a single room.

What fits:

Mattress set (queen or full) + a few boxes
Sofa + a small coffee table + boxes
Contents of a studio apartment (without large appliances)
About 100–120 standard boxes
Bike, kayak paddle, seasonal sports gear

What doesn't fit: a full dining room set plus a bedroom — that starts to push into the next size up.

5×15 — 75 Square Feet

Best for: One-bedroom apartment, large closet cleanout, small business inventory

A 5×15 is a long, narrow unit — great for items that stack well (boxes, bins) or long items like skis, lumber, or kayaks. It holds a full one-bedroom apartment's worth of furniture without appliances.

What fits:

Furnishings of a 1-bedroom apartment (no washer/dryer)
About 150 standard boxes
Long items: skis, surfboards, kayak, ladder
Small to medium antiques or artwork (rolled/crated)

Medium Storage Units

10×10 — 100 Square Feet

Best for: One-bedroom apartment with appliances, small home office contents, business records

The 10×10 is the industry standard "medium" unit — it's what most people picture when they think of self-storage. It's roughly the footprint of a standard bedroom, and it can be packed efficiently to hold a surprising amount.

What fits:

Full contents of a 1-bedroom apartment including washer/dryer and refrigerator
Patio furniture + boxes from a 2-bedroom move
Two full office workstations (desks, chairs, files, monitors)
About 200 standard file boxes

Vermont-specific use: Snowbirds storing the full contents of a Vermont seasonal property while away.

10×15 — 150 Square Feet

Best for: Two-bedroom apartment or small house, vehicle storage (call to confirm availability), business equipment

A 10×15 is the size of a large bedroom or a 20-foot moving truck. It's the right call when you're storing the contents of a 2-bedroom home, or when you have oversized items like a small boat, canoe, or contractor equipment.

What fits:

Furnishings of a 2-bedroom apartment or small house with appliances
Patio furniture, lawn equipment, and many boxes
Carpet rolls, building materials, lumber
A small boat or canoe (call ahead to confirm clearance)

Large Storage Units

10×20 — 200 Square Feet

Best for: Two-bedroom house full contents, contractor equipment, large vehicle or boat

A 10×20 is the size of a one-car garage. It's right for people doing a full home move or long-term storage of a house's contents during a renovation or relocation.

What fits:

Full contents of a 2-bedroom house with appliances
Patio furniture, outdoor tools, and many boxes
Contractor equipment and materials
A vehicle, small boat, or ATV (call ahead to confirm)

10×25 — 250 Square Feet

Best for: Three-bedroom house, large vehicle, business warehouse overflow

What fits:

Full contents of a 3-bedroom house with appliances, patio furniture, garage extras
A full-sized vehicle or boat
Business inventory or warehouse overflow

10×30 — 300 Square Feet

Best for: Four or five-bedroom home, large-scale business storage, multi-vehicle or equipment storage

Our largest unit — equivalent to an extra-long one-car garage. Right for large estate cleanouts, full-business relocations, or storing the complete contents of a large Vermont home.

What fits:

Full furnishings of a 4–5 bedroom house with appliances and garage
Multiple vehicles or equipment (call ahead)
Large-scale business inventory

Why Climate Control Matters for Every Size

At Harbor View, every unit — small or large — is temperature and humidity controlled. That's not standard everywhere, and it matters more in Vermont than most places. Here's why it's worth it regardless of what you're storing:

Vermont winters regularly drop below 0°F. Wood furniture cracks, electronics fail, and certain plastics become brittle in uncontrolled cold storage. Vermont summers bring humidity spikes from the lake that can warp wood, promote mold, and damage paper documents, photos, and textiles.

Our HVAC-maintained facility holds a consistent temperature and humidity level year-round. Whether you're storing ski gear in July or patio furniture in January, your belongings are protected.

How to Pack Your Unit Efficiently

Regardless of which size you choose, these habits make a big difference:

Put heavy boxes on the bottom, lighter ones on top. Stack to the ceiling to maximize cubic footage, not just floor space.
Leave a center aisle if you plan to access items regularly. You'll thank yourself the first time you need something from the back.
Disassemble furniture where possible — bed frames, table legs, and shelving units take up far less space flat.
Label every box on the side, not the top. When boxes are stacked, top labels are invisible.
Use uniform box sizes when you can. Odd-shaped boxes waste vertical space and can shift dangerously.
Wrap electronics and furniture in moving blankets or plastic wrap before storing, even in climate-controlled units.
